INSTEAD of PROSE: Software-Aided Thinking finds many Expressions

I’ve been practising ‘software-aided thinking’, ever since I began to write Word  ‘tables’ such as this one:

In one word, the outcome is “3D Cybernetics”, a ‘spatial’ version of what Norbert Wiener coined cybernetics in the 1950s as:

the scientific study of control and communication in the animal and the machine.

In my interpretation, cybernetics comprises

  • system thinking of people
  • the organisation of information thanks to computers
  • channels of communication between people and computers.

3D Cybernetics is the organisation of information in 3D space.

3D Metrology is a way of measuring 3D phenomena on 2D screens, by quantifying digital images.

However, the 186 tables that I have produced cover more than cybernetics and metrology. They were the tool which

  • allowed major insights into science and technology
  • refined my understanding of time and space
  • inspired me to write a first prototype
  • and then 25 Word documents as software specifications for a second prototype.

Besides using my prototype extensively and getting add-ons developed, I also expressed my insights and understanding in

  • prosaic poetry to share my exaltation and inspirations
  • Excel worksheets for calculations, glossaries and graphs
  • MindMaps for organising thoughts
  • Concordances for analysing texts
  • PowerPoint for getting to the gist of thinking
  • Visio diagrams for specifying details for developers
  • and in writing five patents. But an American IP lawyer advised me to withdraw them. I’m better protected by ‘trade secrets’, she said.
